Android App - Slidescreen

It has been almost 2 years since I got my G1. Still love it.

One of the reasons I love my G1/Android is the customization, especially to the "home" screen. There is a new app called slidescreen which is a home replacement. It is an "entereprise" style home screen, meaning it shows all the latest updates in your personal life on your home screen.

What you see above is what your home screen will look like. The reason it is called slidescreen is the bar in the middle slides up and down. The middle bar separates your content. On the top you have messages (text and gmail), Google calendar appointments, and phone calls. The bottom half has Google Stocks, Google Reader, twitter, and most recently Facebook.

The middle bar shows the weather of your current location (and future forecast, battery life, time, date.

Slide the bar to the top and it filters to show all content from the section.

This is still a new app, so there are lots of new things to come, and bugs to work out. There is a free version in Android Market, and a paid version as well.

End of a Decade

The end of 2009 is more than just a year, it is the end of another decade.

A lot has happened in the last 10 years.

I had my first job this decade. I got into cars. I got my first car (S13 hatch). I graduated high schoool. I started street drifting. I helped with the startup of a new compnay (ClubFR). Grip Gambler started. I graduated college. I destroyed a car (s13 hatch). I got a new car (S13 coupe). I got another car (DC2 Integra). I bought a brand new car (Honda Fit). I went to Japan. I got a full time job. I moved out of my parents house. I met new friends. I reacquainted with old friends. I drove a whole lot of events. I broke my car at a whole lot of events.

I did a lot of things, a lot more than just that, but I hope to do much more in this next decade.

Over the next ten years I plan on traveling a lot more. Australia, Japan again, Zimbabwe, Italy, Brazil, UK again, and wherever else life takes me.

Cheers to the New Year and the New Decade. I wish you all a joyful next 10 years!!

So I have decided to start updating this thing more.

Went snowboarding yesterday, it has been 2 years. My 3rd time doing it, I can somehow manage to go really fast down the hill, but only going right riding goofy. I need to figure out how to go the other way w.o switching to riding normal.

I also heard about an accident with the lifts the day before, but didn't hear what happened until today, see the video below, pretty messed up (14 injured).

The Dark Knight was re released in IMAX this weekend, so we decided to go watch it down at Navy Pier. While in the area we decided to go eat at Heaven on Seven, it is a Cajun restaurant that if you ever have the chance to go to, you have to go! Especially if you like spicy food, the tables have a ridiculous amount of hot sauces on them, below is only about half of our selection.

The above does not show the spicy stuff though, if you ask for it they can bring you the "brown box". I didn't get a good pic, but in it contains thier 4 hottest sauces, the waiter gave us a warning about one of them called "Da Bomb". He says its industrial strength stuff.

Earl tried a drop and jumped up and described it as putting a BWW blazing wing in your mouth all at once. 119,000 scoville units

Someone had asked me some time ago what car I would buy if I could buy any. I think the answer is a PPI Razor. It is an Audi R8 variant. Brings the R8 up 40hp and 26ft/lbs to 460/343. Add on carbon fiber aero, bigger carbon fiber/magnesium wheels and a fancy interior.

If that is not enough for you, then adding GTR to something always makes it better. Same goes for the PPI Razor. This time GTR adds a supercharger and bring the car to 580/443. Bigger brakes, full carbon fiber shell, and more goodies.

QR Codes

So I have had my G1 for about a month now, loving every bit of it. One of the features on it can scan barcodes. Now the main usage in the states is you can scan any product at say Best Buy, the program will take the UPC code or whatever and do a web search for prices. You can either look at online prices and it will show you the cheapest price online and give you a link to the purchase page. Or you can do a local search and it will look at all stores near your GPS area and put it on google maps with prices. You can also put in price points so that it will alert you when the product is at the price you want it.

Now thats is not the coolest part of barcode scanning. The best part is QR Codes or 2D Barcodes. You don't see them in the US much at all, but in Japan you see them all over. I think one of the first phones to feature it was the Nokia Rob was trying to buy when Cloverfield came out.

So as odd as that thing looks it contains information. It can contain a link to a number to call, or a number to text, it can also display text such as instructions, or a nice message. It can also contain a web url, the above is a link to this blog, on the G1 you simply open the barcode scanner then scan and click the link and it brings you here. If you go to Japan you will see these all over, you probably have seen them in Japanese magazines, or on some blog sites.

I hope more phone makers begin adding this function to their phones and it will get used more in the US.

This past weekend was a drift/grip day at Gateway International Raceway. Mike, Earl and myself took our cars down there. This was my first time at this track, and first time drifting at the top of 3rd gear. My power steering was not working, and I broke 2nd gear at USAIR so the beginning of my day sucked, but by the end of the day I got it and this track is badas!! Everyone MUST go to this track.

G Phone

I recently broke my Blackberry, the last few days without it have been hell. I ordered a G1 though, it came out earlier this week, but I won't get mine till Nov 10th.

What is a G1? To most its just a knockoff of an IPhone with a keyboard, but it is very different. So it obviously is a touch screen phone, it has a slide out keyboard like a sidekick. The lack of a real keyboard was what I hated most about the iphone. The big thing about it is it runs on an OS called Android, which is an open source OS, so for geeks it means you can basically create any application for it without having to cut corners and make illegal shit. So in general on the software side it is limitless. The G comes from Google, so you know it has big potential.

Mo got his a few days ago so I had a chance to mess with it. First impressions is it feels good. My big quirk about the iphone vs. my blackberry was although it was thinner it never fealt right in my hand. G1 feels like a phone, its a little bulkier, but not as wide, and just as tall as the iphone.

Now to get away from the iphone vs. g1 talk, the G1 has some great apps. I only played with some for a breif time and read about them. Some of my favorites include ShopSavvy, CompareEverywhere, or GoCart. In general they ar

e all the same, they let you scan a barcode which brings up the product. Then it searches for online prices, then you can go direct to the site and buy, or it searches local stores, then integrates locations on google maps. One of them even has the option to set a price point, the app will alert you when the price goes below it!

Some other cool apps include Locale, lets you set area

s in which your phone will do different things. For instance, say you are within 100 feet of a certain addy, such as your work, the phjoen will automatically change to vibrate, then swithc back when done!

For all you Imeem users, it also has that so you can stream music live on your phone. And the one app that is more of a gimmick but cool none the less, is compass mode in google maps. Basically when you are in street view and compass mode is on, you can move the phone, up and down, side to side and the image you are viewing in

street view will move with you. Coupled with 3G it loads really fast.

Finally got the car dyno'd. I am a bit suprised by the numbers, higher than I expected. Pulled 355hp/281tq at only 15psi and on old shitty plugs.

I will have one more date with the dyno when I fill up on some race gas and boost to 21 pounds, but its almost winter time.

Wrap up on GT Live/Pro-AM and VIR.

The weekend was great. It is nice to just hop in the car and head a few states away. It was one hell of a trip. I was up for 43 straight hours (only took about an hour nap). I survived on NOS energy drink, coffee, and Arizona teas.

The drive was uneventful until VA when we hit the Appalachians, it was around sunrise when we got there, so coupled with the beautiful roads we had some nice scenery. Earl drove the touge portion and made Eric and John sick, and me fear for my life. Reverse back to about 2 days ago when I was scrounging around to try and get some replacement rear tires for my fit since they were bald. I did not get the tires, so we were to savor the tire tread...

Get to the track and help setup. VIR is different than a lot of tracks, its like an amusment parks for Cars... The track is soooo large, there are even tracks in the middle of it, go kart tracks, ;pdhes, even a CDOC. It is the perfect setup. ProAM took place on the Patriot course, all this made me do was want to drive. It is such a fast course but still technical, at some day I will go.

STANCE/Origin booth was a success, lots of people came by and bought stuff, great location, great sales. It was also great meeting a bunch of people from ZT, great bunch of guys!

Overall great weekend. The drive back we finished season 2 of How I met your mother, but Earl forgot a disc so we missed a bit of it. I decided to sleep and just download the rest. Ended up only driving when we hit Chicago. Made it home by 6AM.

Eric Francisco hooked up Eric Scott and I with some ARCA (Nascar for shitty drivers) tickets at Chicagoland speedway. We got there at the start. Began with about 5 or 6 parade laps, course was a little tricky to learn....

First race lap begins these things are loud! First lap and there is a crash... Clean up crew comes out, as I type this it has been about 40 minutes of cleaning the track and it still is not over with.

Favorite Car

So a cousin of mine from the UK came into town, she saw that I was into cars and mentioned her dad got her into F1. Obviously she is a Lewis Hamilton fan and goes to F1 every now and then. She invited me out to come watch it next year, so I may be headed there...

Anyways she asked me what my favorite car was, I sat there for a second and couldn't answer. So I posed the question of what is the use? I don't think I have one favorite car, but here are some of my purpose centered favorites, keep in mind this is about the chassis not the car in the picture.

Truck:

2008 Toyota Tundra - I am not a truck guy, but would really like one for trailering my car. Why this one, maybe it is because I work for Toyota, maybe because it looks like an Evo X, or maybe because it is capable of towing a few cars no problem. Production on these things has gone so low (shutdown for 3 months), prices must be dropping...

Sedan:
Lexus LS - I seem to have this loyalty to Toyota... But how can you not love this thing, its huge, the stylying is amazing, throw some wheels and lip aero on it and its hard to pass by without staring. Complete comfort, quiet ride, some decent power.

Daily:

Honda Fit - You probably are wondering why I would think a car I already have is my favorite, but the more I own this car the more I realize if I had the choice I would do it all over again. The car is small on the outside, but big on the inside, it is a comfortable car, great for long trips. Magic seats help me fit almost anything in it. Gas mileage is on par or better than most hybrids, and its a Honda, gotta love Hondas.

Race Car

R34 Skyline - Sure the R35 seems to surpass it in many which ways, but its hard to not want an R34. It holds the majority of the top times at Tsukuba Circuit. Obviously its hard to ge, so an Evo would fall close to second.

Drift Car

180SX - A lot of people might disagree with me, but when I though about a favorite drift car this is the car that kept coming into mind. Every which way of the 180SX is amazing with the proper setup. Sure a JZX something would be cool, or a 350Z, but I think I will always miss having a hatch. I blame part of this on the rebuild of TF Dave's hatch, I don't really know what he is doing but I know the aero and in general what it will look like... Perfection.

Sure theres no Porsches, Ferrraris, Ariel Atoms, etc... But in the realistic world of cars I really love, this is it. What about you?

HIN Nightshift was this weekend, some Origin drivers and Risky Devil guys were out doing the demo. These demos are always interesting, parking lot was a little small, but the crowd was still hyped up.

Drift Day 23 part deux

Here is a synopsis of the event.

About once a month in the "lovely" town of Shawano ClubFR and its various members invade the town. This weekend is Drift Day 23, and round 3 of the Midwest Cup Series. This event would be a special event as it was a feeder for the Pro-Am Championship. ClubFR would be gathering drivers for the East Division Championship at Virginia International Raceway during GT Live on October 3rd-5th (visit www.proamdrift.com for more details).

This event was overfilled with many drivers coming from all over the Midwest, MN, IL, WI, and IN. Lots of new faces and cars came out for the days events. To even up the playing field a new course was used consisting of a high speed slightly banked entry into a downhill right, followed by a hard left towards the finish.

For today's competition the judges were Formula D driver Brian Peter, Pro-AM invitee Clinton Florczyk, and ClubFR President Simba Nyemba. Morning practice was kept short to bring out the best drivers under pressure. Despite the short practice the competition was tough. Qualifications had various drivers putting thier best runs out there. A few drivers slated to be on the top missed the tandem rounds, but various others stepped it up.

After a long hiatus in drifting Bill Cook from Indy took the top score in qualifications with an almost perfect score from the judges. Mike "Black Magic" Pollard took second in qualifications with his RB powered S13, and Ryan "I came to get down" Clemens took the 3rd spot for qualifications.

During Tandem rounds there were quite a few close runs. tMF Opposition member Mike Pollard closed in on Juan Marquez to advance to the next round against Bill Cook. Mike was looking promising to make it to the finals until his power steering gave up in the middle of his run advancing Bill Cook to the finals.

On the other half of the bracket Ryan Clemens and his S13 went up against Leigh Roto and his MK3 Supra. First round went tied and they went one more time. In the sudden death match Ryan kept the gap to a minimum and advanced to the next round against Doug Artus.

Doug Artus in his borrowed pirate car who has been putting together amazing runs in his KA powered S13 went up against Ryan Clemens in the semi finals. Doug had been consistent all day, until Ryan put some pressure on him and was able to take the win and head to the finals.

In the final round tMF Opposition member Ryan Clemens and Bill Cook both had amazing runs, almost perfect mirror runs. In the second run Ryan and his SR20 edged over Bill and his CA18 to take the win.

The podium saw Ryan Clemens on top, Bill Cook in second, and Doug Artus in third place.

As this was a Pro-Am feeder event, the top drivers from the day were awarded an invite to the Championship event. The judges were highly impressed with all of the top 8 drivers that an invite was awarded to all Top 8 drivers.

Drift Day 23

Drift Day 23 finally came around, at everyones favorite USAIR. This event was a Pro-AM feeder event. So the best drivers of the day get to go to ProAM championship at VIR.

There were quite a few new faces, and quite a few non 240s which is always refreshing. Some pics below from Bruce and T2 Tim.

So here is my car in its current state, it runs, sorta, untuned and runs pig rich...

On a side note, if you are shopping for a switch panel for your car, get an Auto Rod Control panel. I have the 8 switch panel, as you can see in the video it's flat, all buttons can be momentary or a regular on/off. Any one button can also be a master kill switch. The best part is it is attached by a really long ribbon which can reach around the entire car.

So I am going to Canada again for "business". Too bad it is one weekend after Caribana. I now need to see if I can coax my work into letting me stay the weekend, well rather to pay for the extended stay.

Finally back to Chicago!

I brought back Phil too, sorta, but he is dragging at coming home, he will be back this weekend!

Last night in LA was fun, met up with Benson and Nadine at their place.

We had to decide between Gyu-Kaku (Bukkake if your Nadine...) and Din Tai Fung for dinner. Ended up going to Din Tai Fung, and it was delicious, if you ever get a chance to go to one, you should go!

We also went to a comedy show on Sunset in Hollywood. It was Nadines friends birthday and he is the creator of Live Comedey L.A. Blog, so he brought along his favorite acts. It was a good show, never went to an amateur stand up before.

I also got my first experience with Roscoes Chicken & Waffles! It is such a weird combo. I got the 1/4 chicken smothered in gravy add some hot sauce, and a side of waffles. It was great!

And the best part about the trip is I got paid and only used one personal day!

OH and Benson left me with trouble as a parting gift...

No Foolishness

There is something about chilli and cheese in Cali, everything has it on it... Went to Tommy's and got the Mega Combo. Basically it is a triple burger, triple chilli, triple sized drink, and top it off with a triple bypass surgery.

Also went to Dromo1 finally, it wasn't closed and private like it was the last time we came. Way better than CIR!

Finished the night off with some more Touge Action. A cop came by and told us no foolishness. So we decided no weed or drinking, cop went the other way up the hill and they took another run... Then a helicopter came up the mountain, attempted to do some flatspins, failed horribly at that, and the cop came out. 30 minutes later the cop leaves, the helicopter decides to show us he is still a man and proceeds up the mountain, 5 minutes later the cop zooms by chasing him again. Another 30 minutes goes by and the helicopter comes down with a sad face.

Vegas wrap up

My Vegas trip has ended and it was pretty badass.

On Friday night met up with Chase and Blair (Jinkz) stopped by the track for a little bit, said hello to some people. Watched non seeded quals.

The track was pretty crazy. 4th gear entry 80-90 mph into a slight kink left directly into a wall, then transition right into another wall where the clips are, then a loop around. It is shaped like a backwards question mark. You have to commit very hard in the first corner, many people did commit and crashed. BP was there, but he didnt qualify.

After that went out on the town with some of the AZ boys, since its Vegas you can drink on the street and we did (yes I did).

As fruity as the drink looks it is really strong. At some point in time we ended uo in a truck bed and at some bar by Fremont. Ended up getting home around 5AM..

Next day we go back to the track for the event. Alex decided to finally drive, but he crashed his car the night before so he is just playing around on his scooters and shit doing wheelies like every other Hawaiian.

Manabu Orido was also at this event, first FD event, and let me say his car sounds amazing, I beleive it is a 3.4 liter 2J, its heavy as hell, but he still drives like a badass.

Yoshioka, driving for ASpec ended up winning the event. He won the last time there was a drift event here for D1GP. The points in FD are now all over the place.

After the event we met up with the Drift Alliance boys, JR, Chris, Ryan, Tony, Tony's little bro Jake, and some other guys.

After a little while the testerone started floating an they started betting who was the strongest, but this isnt a simple $10 bet. These guys bet bigger stakes.

Yes that is 200 bucks. This went on for a while and at a few different locations. 6AM rolls around and the sun comes up and everyone decides to go to one more place, we end up at Hard Rock and stick around there till about 8AM.

An overall great night and great trip. Now I am sitting at the airport waiting for my delayed flight to go see Phil!

Minnesota Dontyaknow

This past weekend was 4th of July and ClubFR put together its first Drift Day in Minnesota at Elko Speedway.

To start this weekend off with the nice 6 hour drive to MN, took the fit and T2 Films Tim's Risky "Banana" Devil Quest. Picked up Phill in Madison and I end up leaving the gas pump in the car and drive off. I guess you can consider it my protest against gas... I end up having to pay 25 bucks to fix itm and we head on over to MN.

Just before the boarder we stop at Fireworks City. We went at the request of Kristi to get some sparklers and little things. We end up buying Roman candles, and all this other random stuff. As we get to the back we find a box that we noticed everyone had called Goliath. It is huge and looks dangerous. So we ask if Fireworks are legal in MN and the guy laughs and says no. So we start second guessing this purchase. Then we see they have a deal for Goliath and a different one called Excalibur for a little less than the price of one. This is what we ended up getting:

So we get to Keith's place and settle in and get some drinks and sit outside and begin to bbq. As we are eating we start hearing fireworks (its still daylight). It is Keith's neighbors, and in his neighborhood it sounds like Earl is just driving around backfiring. At this point we realize it is nothing like Chicago and we won't have any problems with the law. It is like 9:30 and for some reason still bright outside and Earl is getting a bit antsy and starts to lay out all the fireworks all while smoking. We sedate him with potato salad and corn and he disappears to the bathroom for a while.

It finally gets dark out, we mess with the Roman candles for a bit, and the girls play with sparklers.

I have never seen people get so excited over sparklers, you need to see Anabel's face to truly grasp the joy of a child...

Most of you will figure out that this was a complete Earl production by looking at the next pic.

Minus the Diet Pepsi, everything looks good right...? So it finally gets dark enough for the fun stuff and all the mortars are on the board 4 attached to each other and same with the wicks as shown. We light it, roll the film on the camera, and step back. The wicks burn brighter than the sparklers as we wait in anticipation, then in a glorious earthshaking thump to the chest and ears 2 of the firework shoot up into the sky. Screams, cheers, and laughs are heard for a couple seconds, then the other two go off. One goes up as the other two explode in the sky, and lonely number four shoots straight into the corner of the backyard and bursts right in front of us in a shiny explosion. The screams and the laughs keep coming as Anabel wonders why she has beer all over her. As our eyes readjust to the normal light we realize one of the tubes flew right by her and knocked over a drink, and the other one is in front of the bon fire.

After almost killing us all we decide to staple them down and continue on with the show. We continue the night with drinking and crazy fireworks and let this go down as the best 4th of July ever!

The next day is event day, the girls go to Mall of America, and we go to Elko Speedway. Overall the event went well, we had a full event, all but one from Minnesota, so despite all the hate MN stepped it up and drove. After the event there was an Eve of Destruction. This is basically where 5000 show up drink, and watch cars, trucks, and busses run around the doing figure 8s, tipping over, hitting walls. Don't forget the Monster Trucks and Megasaurasus as well.

tMF Opposition did 2 demos during the evening and put on a great show for the fans out there. Mike, Ryan, Scott, and D all did an amazing job. Chris from Heiruspecs took care of narrating all the craziness. tMF even got some Kumho Blue and Reds for a patriotic Red, White, and Blue, burnout!

If you ever get a chance to go to MN check out an EoD, they are fun to watch, especially if the tMF boys are out there demoing.

ZipTied All Star bash was this past weekend. I think the best thing about Pro-Am is rolled in a nice little bun for this event (even the dirt). I need to make it out to one of these, they are already planning ASB 16... I think it will be in November, to go or not to go, that is the question.

Saw the movie Wanted last night, it was actually good. Filmed in Chicago, so of course Lower Wacker is in there. It is like Matrix and Fight Club mixed together, no Brad Pitt but you get his better half. It is nice and bloody, and comes with a few laughs.
